Description:
This tremendous Flemish armoire in the Flemish/dutch 17th century style likely dates from the mid-to-late 19th century. It's reminiscient of the Flemish dower cupboards commonly carved with caryatids and figural panels from early-to-mid 1600s, known as beeldenkast or statue cupboards, which were created as dowry pieces or wedding presents and intended for the storage of linens. Measures approximately 85" tall, 51" wide and 20.5" deep. Left door features a carved panel depicting a courting gentleman calling on his love interest, while the right door panel depicts this same gentleman being welcomed inside her gate by his lady. Upper panel on each door features a half-circular pierced panel with turned spindles, and this same motif is repeated in a full circle on the lower panels. Doors also feature wonderful escutcheon plates and Baroque style barrel hinges support each door. We also have a three-drawer low chest in similar style which is being sold separately. This item resides in our client's home in Brooklyn Ny and may be seen in person by appointment.
