African wooden mask, 20th century, female ancestor mask, pwo-mask. More then one million Chokwe people are living in Angola, Congo and Zambia. The pwo mask is part of the initiations ritual for young women, representing a female ancestor. A young male is disguised with traditional female clothing and the pwo-mask.

He dances with short, mincing steps, representing the embodiment of procreative power. As the female ancestor he watches over the fertility of the future generations.
