Description:
This original woodcut print by Milton Avery (1893-1965) dates from 1952 and depicts a firebird. Printed in yellow and black ink on Japan paper. Signed and dated by the artist in pencil. Recently professionally matted and framed by our client. The print was previously framed and during our initial inspection we captured one image of the print while it lay under matte covering the top and bottom edges. In our closeup of this image you will see a note in pencil by the artist and an arrow pointing to the lower right corner where there are markings which appear to relate to the registration of the black and yellow print. This work is not numbered. A review of Milton Avery Prints 1933-1955 by Harry Lunn Jr. (Alan Wofsy Fine Arts, 1973) will likely reveal more information about this particular print. We also have a 1953 Avery woodcut depicting a black and blue rooster. Each resides in our client's gallery on the Upper West Side of Manhattan in New York City and may be seen in person by appointment.
