Large Antique Roman Ruins Landscape Oil Painting

This nineteenth century oil painting depicts Roman ruins with figures in the foreground, and resides in its original black-painted frame measuring an impressive 69.25 by 40.75 by 2.75 inches. The stretcher measures 60" by 32".
Executed in the Grand Tour tradition, this work is possibly of Italian origin. Unfortunately we have no details on provenance. No signature has been found. The painting will benefit from a professional cleaning which may reveal a signature. There are no tears or repairs and the surfact shows craquelure throughout, but there are no visible paint losses.
