Description:
This large porcelain charger from the nineteenth century is believed to be of Russian origin, and depicts a brutal battle between Roman and enemy troops. The scene is surrounded by a gold border set within a purple colored ground. It measures an impressive 19.75" (50.2 cm) in diameter and resides in a period frame measuring 26" (66.0 cm) in diameter and 2.25" (5.7 cm) deep. Total estimated weight is 20 lbs. Condition of the plate is excellent, with no signs of restoration or repair of any kind. The colors in the painted scene are bright and show little signs of wear. There is no visible signature. The rear carries a blue painted mark which is either a capital letter I or H. The frame has a fine patina and some obvious repairs. Unfortunately we have no information related to provenance. This item resides with our client on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in New York and may be seen by appointment.
