19th century Caldas Da Rainha Portuguese Palissy ware wall plate with snakes, lizards, turtle and butterfly on mossy ground. Manuel Mafra crown mark and back pierced for hanging.
Manuel Cipriano Gomes Mafra is credited with starting the Portuguese Palissy ware revival in the late 1850’s and was the dominant Caldas Da Rainha ceramist for 30 years and the first to establish an international market for Portuguese Palissy ware. After Mafra’s works were comissioned by the king Don Fernando II the crown was authorized as part of his mark. Mafra’s son, Eduardo Augusto Mafra continued the company with the mark “M. Mafra Filho” from 1887-1894.
