Description:
A view of Rome by Herman Armour Webster, born in New York City in 1878. Watercolor over sepia ink.

A fresh and lively plein-air sketch of the Campo de Fiori, the outdoor flower market in the heart of old Rome. Webster establishes the scene with loosely drawn sepia pen lines over traces of pencil. The added watercolor washes complete the sense of a bright autumn day. Webster was born in New York in 1878, then went to Paris as early as 1900 and studied under Laurens and Braquemond. Webster was a great traveler who drew many cityscapes and landscapes on his trips in Europe. He was also a prolific printmaker.

Signed by the artist, lower right corner, and titled on the reverse.
