Description:
This fabulous bronze from the late nineteenth century depicts Napoleon Crossing the Alps, after the oil paintings by Jacques-louis David which were completed between 1801 and 1805. It measures 16 by 16 by 8 inches (40.6 by 40.6 by 20.3 cm) and weighs an estimated 30-45 lbs. (13.6-20.4 kg). The quality of the casting is exceptional, as seen in the details on Napoleon's face, uniform and sword. Patina color features warm shades of brown with hints of forest green color. This work is titled in the cast Napoleon with reference to Annibus on the lower left corner, and is signed David in the lower right corner. On the lower right side is the foundry mark "R. Patrouilleau Editeur". Sculptor is unknown. This item resides with our client in northern New Jersey and may be seen in person by appointment.napoleon Crossing the Alps (also known as Napoleon at the Saint-bernard Pass or Bonaparte Crossing the Alps) is the title given to five versions of an oil on canvas equestrian portrait painted by the French artist Jacques-louis David which were originally commissioned by the Spanish Ambassador to France. Like the paintings, this bronze shows an idealized view of the real crossing that Napoleon's army made through the St. Bernard Pass in 1800, which enabled the French to surprise the Austrian army and win victory at the Battle of Marengo in June of 1800. As in David's paintings, this bronze references Hannibal (Annibal), the great Carthaginian general who marched into the Italian peninsula during the Second Punic War and won a great battle against the Romans. Napoleon was known to have quoted Hannibal and likened his attack on the Austrians to Hannibal's attack upon the Romans.
