Description:
Sepia ink and wash with white gouache heightening. Charles de Thevenin was the director of the French Academy in Rome in the late 18th century. This large drawing is a study for a painting exhibited at the Salon of 1792.

Oedipus was a blind wandering exile in his old age, cared for by Antigone (his daughter and sister). This is his state at the beginning of Sophocles' Oedipus at Colonus, a fitting topic for the extreme Noclassicism of French art at the end of the 18th century.

Provenance: Private Collection, Paris.
