Mikhail Chemiakin (b. Moscow 1943), an American citizen, is a painter, sculptor, stage designer, and publisher and member of The Noncomformist Tradition of St. Petersburg. He spent his early years in East Germany, returning to the Soviet Union In 1957 to study art at The Il'ya Repin Institute of Painting as well as sculpture and architecture, but was expelled in 1971 for failing to conform to the Socialist Realism norms. An ideological dissident, Chemiakin was subjected To "compulsory treatment" at a mental institution, an experience which he has explored in his work. He fled to Paris where he painted and developed the first Carnival Of Saint Petersbourg gouaches. In 1989, Chemiakin's work was exhibited in Post Soviet Russia. Major sculptures have been installed In St. Petersburg, Venice, San Francisco and New York. A recent project, The Staging of The Nutcracker, has received world wide acclaim.
