Description:
Tin-glazed faience stove tile by Ludwig Pfau, c.1650. The Pfau family operated a famous maiolica workshop in Winterthur, Switzerland in the 17th century and produced maiolica decorated with scenes from antiquity and religious history. New York's Metropolitan Museum has a complete stove made of these tiles showing the life of Christ and various saints. Ours illustrates an event in the history of ancient Rome. The unglazed back of the tile has raised ribs characteristic of stove tiles. Provenance: New York private collection.
